Building DICOM Viewers the Smart Way

Hello Reader,

Welcome to another edition of PYCAD newsletter where we cover interesting topics in Machine Learning and Computer Vision applied to Medical Imaging. The goal of this newsletter is to help you stay up-to-date and learn important concepts in this amazing field! I've got some cool insights for you below ↓

Building a Smarter DICOM Viewer with Plugins

One of the best decisions we made when building our DICOM viewer was turning each functionality into a plugin. This approach gave us a solid base for the web app, supporting multiple layouts like MPR, MPR+VR, and MPR+3D Mesh. Each plugin handles a specific task, using VTK on the backend and Vue.js on the frontend, all running inside a Trame application.

The beauty of this setup? You can easily add or remove modules based on client needs without touching the core app. This flexibility makes it simple to create custom solutions while keeping the main viewer stable just like how 3D Slicer extensions work.

If you’re building your own DICOM viewer, this modular approach can save time and headaches. And if you need help, the PYCAD team is always here to support you.

The Most Overhyped Technologies in Healthcare

Not every futuristic-sounding health innovation is ready for prime time. From 3D-printed drugs and digital contact lenses to humanoid nurse robots and medical tricorders, some technologies have generated more buzz than real world impact. Experts warn that hype can slow progress by creating false expectations and putting unnecessary pressure on innovators. The key takeaway? Stay optimistic, but keep both feet on the ground breakthroughs take time, and not every headline translates into immediate clinical use.
